Your Markham Centre

***UPDATE: Given recent developments around COVID-19, the City has decided to postpone all in-person public engagement related to the Markham Centre Secondary Plan update until June or until further notice. This includes the following events:

  • Youth Pop Up
  • Youth Design Jam
  • Children’s Pop Up
  • Visioning Workshop

Please stay tuned for updates. In the interim, please feel free to use the tools on this webpage to give us your feedback on Your Markham Centre.

Markham Centre is set to become the City’s vibrant mixed-use downtown, serving all of its diverse communities. Tremendous progress has been made toward this vision since the adoption of the first plan for the area in the 1990s. However, it is time to revisit and update the Markham Centre Secondary Plan to ensure that Markham Centre continues to grow and evolve as a community we can be proud to live, work, and have fun in.

Last year, we held several pop-ups across the City to find out what the community thought of Markham Centre (see Community Engagement Summary Report). You told us that you loved Markham Centre's proximity to the Rouge River, its shops, restaurants, entertainment venues, and building design. You also told us that you wished there were more parks, public gathering spaces, affordable housing, and community services. This year, we're embarking on the next phase of engagement. As we develop a vision and options for the future of Markham Centre, we invite you to participate further and give your input on what you want to see in your downtown!

  • When is the planned elementary school supposed to be built?

DTMResident asked about 1 month ago

We know that the existing schools in the area are operating near or over 100% utilization, including the maximum number of portables. This means it will be very difficult to accommodate additional students resulting from new development in Markham Centre in existing schools. To address this, the York Region District School Board has submitted a funding request for a Markham Centre elementary school to the Ministry of Education for a proposed 2023 opening but has not received a decision from the Ministry at this time.
