The City of Markham has received complaints regarding non-local traffic using Dickson Hill Road as a shortcut between 19th Avenue and Highway 48 (south intersection). Specific issues noted by residents include excess traffic volume, speeding and overall reduction in traffic safety and quality of life for local residents.

In response, City staff brought forward a report to the Development Services Committee meeting on November 23, 2020, recommending that Dickson Hill Road be closed to all traffic, just north of Mindtech Montessori School.

Markham City Council approved the recommendation, subject to receiving majority support (two-thirds) from residents residing on Dickson Hill Road, south of 19th Avenue. This is the specific location and conceptual illustration of the closure:

The road closure would consist of:

  • concrete barriers;
  • a gate for emergency access, road maintenance functions; and
  • mandatory safety signage.

What does this road closure mean?

  • Through traffic would be restricted from traveling on Dickson Hill Road between 19th Avenue and Highway 48 (south intersection).
  • Residents north of the closure can access Highway 48 only via 19th Avenue.
  • Mindtech Montessori school will be accessible only via Highway 48 (south intersection).
  • Road classification will change from a primary to secondary road.
  • Under primary classification, Dickson Hill Road receives winter maintenance to achieve bare surface conditions 24 hours a day. Under a secondary classification, winter maintenance will be reduced, providing treatment only during 7 AM to 6 PM. The same classification currently applies to Mill Race Court.
