2021 Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day is a day for all Canadians to remember the men and women who served and sacrificed for our country.

In July of 1921, the Great War Veterans Association (which in 1925 would unify with other Veteran groups to form the Canadian Legion) adopted the poppy as the flower of Remembrance. Since then, the poppy has become widely accepted in Canada as a symbol of Remembrance.

This Remembrance Day, Markham marks the 100th year of the poppy as Canada's symbol of Remembrance. As part of the City of Markham's virtual Remembrance Day observance this year, we honour the anniversary of the poppy and remember all those who wore a uniform for Canada.

During this time of Remembrance, the City invites you to leave a message in the virtual Book of Remembrance below to honour the sacrifice of all those who have fallen, served, and still serve.

My father went to war in September 1939 at age 19 but he did come home at the end of the war. He was disappointed to miss schooling but married my Mom and got a job and worked hard his whole life.
I cannot imagine how hard it was for all of those men but am grateful for every one of them.
Thank you veterans, may God bless you all.

It is always with heavy heart and great pride that I honour and remember all of those who served our great country many making the ultimate sacrifice. War is horrific and unimaginable except for those that have lived it. They are true heroes that serve their country without hesitating. We owe them everything for the freedoms and liberties we take for granted daily. Lest we forget. ❤️

This Remembrance Day, I will remember those brave individuals who proudly served our country and gave the ultimate sacrifice in hopes for peace and freedom. I also recognize those who continue to serve so that we, as a nation and as individuals, can continue to live in peace. We must never forget.

Thank you Markham for providing this opportunity to honour the courage, valour and sacrifice of the heroes who have served – and continue to serve – Canada during times of war and conflict.

I get very emotional on Remembrance Day. To think of all the soldiers who showed up, fought hard and then not live another day. You were brave, you were young and you helped us more than you will know.
Thank you is not enough. Eternal peace grant to them o Lord. Amen
