Overview

The Markham Village Heritage Conservation District (the “MVHCD”), created in 1991, is one of the City’s oldest heritage districts as well as its largest containing 709 properties. To ensure that the heritage significance of the MVHCD is maintained and enhanced as Markham grows, the City is undertaking a review of the MVHCD Plan.

What is the MVHCD Plan?

The MVHCD Plan identifies properties of cultural heritage value, provides policies and guidelines to conserve the District’s village-like character, and helps ensure complementary layers of new growth.

Why are we updating the MVHCD Plan?

The current MVHCD Plan has served the City well since its adoption by Council in 1991. However, much has changed in the last 34 years. This includes best practice in heritage conservation and how and where growth is occurring in Markham. This project offers an opportunity for Heritage staff to gather feedback from the community as to which components of the MVHCD Plan are working, and which components could benefit from changes to better protect and reinforce the heritage character of Markham Village. The goal is to create a revised MVHCD Plan with carefully crafted policies and guidelines that conserve what makes the community special and to ensure that new development reinforces this character. To this end, the City will be holding two community meetings in the next six months to hear from residents and stakeholders about what they value most about the community and how the MVHCD Plan can be improved.
