Project Status: Phase 2 (Thematic Areas of Review Work)

We are currently in the second phase of the review. During this time, we will be gathering feedback from the community. Your input on various planning issues, priorities and concerns for the community is invaluable as we move forward with this project.

On April 14, 2026, a presentation introducing the Official Plan Review project workplan was presented to Development Services Committee and the public - the agenda and meeting video can be found under here.

Please continue to let us know how you would like to be engaged, your vision for Markham, and what issues or areas the Official Plan Review should focus on. Please look forward to more engagement opportunities in Spring 2026.

What is an Official Plan?

Every city is required to have a plan to manage and direct its growth. This is known as the Official Plan. This plan reflects a city’s goals and policies. It looks ahead to the future and ensures that social, economic, cultural and environmental factors are considered. Rules about future land use are based on an official plan and it guides the review and approval of development applications in a city.

Why does Markham’s 2014 Official Plan need to be reviewed and updated?

In 2014, York Region Council approved Markham’s Official Plan. Since then, many policies have changed. These include new provincial and regional plans and policies that will need to be considered through the Official Plan Review.

This is also a chance to make sure that Markham’s Official Plan, created in 2014, still takes into account the community’s needs and priorities. Updates to the Official Plan will intend to reflect the needs and priorities of the city’s various communities.

Stay Informed and Involved!
