Thank you for taking the time to learn more about Markham’s Official Plan Review! This website provides information about the project, including events and news. There will be opportunities to share your thoughts so please sign up for notifications. You’ll find the sign-up box in the upper right corner of this page.
What is an Official Plan?
Every city is required to have a plan to manage and direct its growth. This is known as the Official Plan. This plan reflects a city’s goals and policies. It looks ahead to the future and ensures that social, economic, cultural and environmental factors are considered. Rules about future land use are based on an official plan and it guides the review and approval of development applications in a city.
Why does Markham’s 2014 Official Plan need to be reviewed and updated?
In 2014, York Region Council approved Markham’s Official Plan. Since then, many policies have changed. These include new provincial and regional plans and policies that will need to be considered through the Official Plan Review.
This is also a chance to make sure that Markham’s Official Plan, created in 2014, still takes into account the community’s needs and priorities. Updates to the Official Plan will intend to reflect the needs and priorities of the city’s various communities.
Project Status: Phase 1 (Pre-Planning)
We are currently in the first phase of the review. During this time, we will be gathering feedback from the community. Through a variety of engagement methods, residents will be asked to provide feedback on planning issues, priorities, as well as concerns for the community. It is important, in this phase, to bring awareness to the community about this project.
Stay Informed and Involved!
We encourage your comments now and throughout the course of the Official Plan Review. If you have any questions or would like to submit comments, please email officialplanreview@markham.ca.
Exciting project updates are on the way. Keep an eye out for updates on this website coming soon!
