The City of Markham is commencing the detailed design for the widening and reconstruction of Rodick Road and Miller Avenue, within the identified limits.

The City has retained Hatch Ltd., to provide detailed design consulting services for this project. Pre-Design Notices are being distributed to stakeholders and impacted residents.

Study Area

Rodick Rd and Miller Ave are in the southern portion of the City of Markham, located south of Highway 407 and east of Highway 404. The study area of this detailed design includes Rodick Road (from Miller Avenue to approximately 100 meters south of 14th Avenue) and Miller Avenue (from Woodbine Avenue to Rodick Road), as shown in the map below.

Goal

The goal of the project is to widen and reconstruct both Rodick Rd and Miller Ave, with supporting infrastructure to accommodate traffic growth in the area.

Scope of Work

This project involves engineering design for the widening of Rodick Rd (from 14th Ave to Miller Ave) and Miller Ave (from Woodbine Ave to Rodick Rd), from 2 lanes (rural cross-section) to 4 lanes (urban cross-section), along with other infrastructure upgrades. The general scope of work includes:

  • Miller Avenue Environmental Assessment Amendment
  • Widening of Rodick Rd and Miller Ave inclusive of curbs and driveways.
  • New active transportation facility and sidewalk on both sides of Rodick Road and Miller Avenue
  • New signalized intersections
  • Improvements to existing intersections
  • New/upgraded street lighting
  • Storm water management and new storm sewers.
  • New sanitary sewers
  • Watermain upgrade/replacement
  • Utility relocation to accommodate the road widening

Background – Rodick Rd and Miller Ave.

The City of Markham completed the extension and reconstruction of Rodick Road from Yorktech Drive to Miller Avenue, and the extension and widening of Rodick Road from Esna Park Drive to north of Riviera Drive. The City is proceeding with the last phase of the Rodick Road widening project, from 14th Avenue to Miller Avenue, in addition to widening of Miller Avenue from Rodick Road to Woodbine Avenue.

In 2013, the City of Markham undertook a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Study (EA) to support future growth of Miller Avenue from Woodbine Ave to Kennedy Road. The EA followed a schedule ‘C’ planning process. Widening of Miller Ave is a preferred alternative of the EA and as such is being included in this project.

In addition to road widening, the project includes reconstruction and upgrades to urbanize the roads and upgrade all relevant infrastructure to accommodate for future developments.
