The City of Markham is working on new City-wide Urban Design Guidelines. We want to hear from you as we help shape the future of development in Markham!
What is Urban Design?
Urban design is about:
Shaping the City with high quality buildings, vibrant streets, distinct spaces, and memorable places.
The layout and design of buildings, public spaces, streets, and landscapes.
The physical environment that affects how people interact with each other, how they move around and how they use and experience a place.
Here is a short video produced by the NYC Department of City Planning to help you better understand what urban design is and how it impacts your everyday life.
Why are Urban Design Guidelines important for Markham?
Markham has experienced much growth in recent years and will continue to become more urban with time. To help direct and manage this growth, the Urban Design Guidelines will focus on intensification areas in Markham. These are where most future developments are projected.
As a planning tool, the Urban Design Guidelines will provide design direction for an attractive and healthy built environment that puts people first.
What will the Guidelines Address?
Three major building types have been identified for Guideline development, including:
Townhouses
Mid Rise Buildings
Tall Buildings
All three building types will apply to intensification areas in Markham and will focus on some of the followinghigh-level topics:
Site Context, Design and Organization;
Exterior Building Design and Massing;
Relationship of Building to the Street; and
Retail At-Grade.
How Can I Get Involved?
While the Guidelines are being developed, both internal and external partners will be engaged to make sure the City’s design expectations match industry standards and best practices. An external consultant will also review the Guidelines for each building type to find gaps and areas that need more attention.
There are multiple ways for community members and other stakeholders to provide input. We invite you to:
Receive project updates by entering your email and clicking the “Subscribe” button under “Stay Informed”; and
Participate in the upcoming public open house (date TBC).
