The City of Markham marks the passing of former Ward 8 Councillor Alex Chiu.

Alex Chiu served on Markham Council for 33 years and played an instrumental role in the City of Markham’s growth and development. Alex was a fixture in the Milliken Mills community and was instrumental in the push for the Milliken Mills Community Centre which opened in 1989. In recognition of his extraordinary public service, the pool at Milliken Mills Community Centre was dedicated in his name in 2019.

An exceptional community leader, Alex fundraised for a variety of community organizations including all three York Region hospitals. Known as “Alex’s Swim,” he swam 100 laps non-stop each day for one week as a fundraiser for the City of Markham’s United Way campaign. Over 20 years, the Alex Chiu Golf Tournament donated more than $2 million to many organizations including the Markham YMCA, York Regional Police Community Safety Village, Power Unit Youth Organization, and the Centre for Immigrant and Community Services, amongst others. He also raised funds for a mobile fire house teaching children about fire safety. As co-chair of the annual Markham Theatre Gala, he raised thousands of dollars for the Discovery Program providing children the opportunity to experience live theatre.

Included in his philanthropy was a cause near and dear to him: ALS Double Play. After losing his son Christopher to ALS, Alex and his family made it their mission to continue Christopher’s legacy through fundraising for ALS research. Just this week, York University announced the first student award established at the future York University Markham Centre Campus. The Alex Chiu Community Involvement Award in Markham is an entrance award to graduating Markham high school students attending York University Markham Centre Campus who have demonstrated outstanding community involvement.

Former Councillor Alex Chiu retired from political office in 2018. His contributions to our community were immense and his legacy will never be forgotten. Flags at all City of Markham facilities including the Markham Civic Centre, Milliken Mills Community Centre and Markham Fire and Emergency Services stations will be lowered in his honour and memory during the week of his funeral scheduled for June 3, 2021.

May he rest in peace

Tito Alex, you were such a force that blew into my world...our world. I didn't get the chance to really thank you for what you have done for me. Taste of Broadway is your success. You were the driving force behind all these shows, always pushing me to do one more show, always telling me that I can do it. I still remember the last time you pulled me aside to do one more broadway show during the PIDC celebration. I remember your words, "One more show, I'll support you. Get everyone together." That day I started to gather the troupe and our last show, "Taste of Broadway - Remastered" came to fruition. It was a dedication to your son, Christopher, but it's now a tribute to you. Whenever someone came up to me to ask why I did it, my answer was always, "tito Alex said to do one more show!" When you call, we all follow. So tito Alex, shine bright among the stars and continue to lead us, your legacy lives on. You will be truly missed but never forgotten #AlexChiu

Our sincere condolences to Alicia and Cherrie. Our thoughts are with you. As a councillor myself, now some twenty years ago, I well remember working together with Councillor Alex Chiu on the many issues that faced our city during those times. It was always a pleasure, as he was consistently thoughtful and knowledgeable about all things affecting the city and his ward. He was always dedicated to doing what was right and of benefit to the community. In short he was a thoroughly decent man, respected by all. Markham will miss him greatly.
