What are we doing and why?

The City of Markham's Official Plan 2014 identifies the need for a new secondary plan for Cornell Centre.

The City of Markham is undertaking an update to the Cornell Centre Secondary Plan. The process will address land use and urban design, transportation and municipal servicing to support the development of a sustainable and complete community.

The secondary plan area is approximately 244 hectares and consists of the Cornell Centre Key Development Area, as well as a significant Employment Area. Key Development Areas are intensification areas identified in the City's Official Plan, that are supported by transit and can accommodate a variety of housing choices and employment opportunities.

Cornell Centre is located on the eastern edge of the City’s urban area, supported by key destinations such as the Markham Stouffville Hospital, Cornell Community Centre, and a Regional Transit Terminal - The Cornell GO Bus Terminal. The Secondary Plan area as shown in purple on the map above, is envisioned to become a residential and mixed-use key development area with employment and residential development in single use and mixed-use settings, providing for office, retail, service, entertainment and recreational uses, and a variety of higher density housing types.
