Age Friendly Design Guidelines
The City of Markham is developing new Age-Friendly Design Guidelines and we want to hear from you as we help make Markham a great place for everyone - from 0-99!
The Markham Age-Friendly Design Guidelines will provide design direction for new and redeveloping communities, focusing on three scales: the unit, the building and the neighbourhood.
We want to know how you live, work and play in Markham – whether you are a local teen, a young family new to the community or an older adult looking to age-in-place. Tell us how we can make homes, buildings and neighbourhoods safer, more social and more accessible for everyone, regardless of their age or ability.

0-99 Ideas Challenge!
4 months agoPost an image and/or write a comment telling us how you would make Markham a more age-friendly place - in your home, in your building or in your neighbourhood. You can post as many ideas as you like, or contribute by clicking the heart button on other people's ideas that you support.
Things to consider: aging in place, raising children in vertical communities, multi-generational living, getting around your neighbourhood, enjoying parks and open spaces, gathering with friends, and staying active in your community as you age.
Information gathered on this ideas wall will help our team develop a set of innovative and implementable age-friendly design guidelines for the City of Markham.

Dennis3 months agoLocal Roads - Winter Maintenance
Local roads with no sidewalks need better winter maintenance, lower speed limits (30km) and signage indicating the road is a shared road for pedestrians and cars. Markham has the lowest winter maintenance service levels in the GTA for local roads. The roads are impossible to walk on for many days during the winter because of icy conditions. This puts all pedestrians at risk of falling or being injured by a sliding car but especially seniors, children and persons with disabilities. Markham needs a better plan for providing safe winter walking conditions everywhere everyday throughout the year.

Don't because when summer comes, you can just let it melt. (But if it's summer and you're reading this then just remember this tip.)

In the 70's, we lived in row houses in Montreal. Our one floor main level had three bedrooms, one bathroom, W/D, kitchen, a small dinette area and a living rm ... basically, all we needed. The upper rental floor had the same layout. Our basement rental was over 800 sq ft. A backyard was shared by three households. We were able to subsidize our mortgage with the two rental incomes. Cars were allowed to park on streets overnight. Today's version of row houses, namely, "stacked townhouses" doesn't the same benefit(s).

Each community should have local areas around parks or unused lands to allow local residents to plants fruit trees, bushes and veggies. The area would be a joint venture between the City and local volunteers wanting to get their hands dirty to plant food for community shelters or folks wanting a little locally grown food.
