The City of Markham is developing a School Zone Safety Guide to enhance road safety around school zones and along school routes in Markham. This Guide will include engineering measures, education, and outreach programs that cater to elementary and secondary school students.

Improving the safety of all road users, especially around school sites, is a high priority for the City as it involves young children. Having safer and more active ways to get to and from schools supports the overall well-being of students and school communities. This also aligns with the City’s 2020 – 2026 Strategic Plan to achieve a “Safe, Sustainable & Complete Community” in Markham. The School Zone Safety Guide builds upon the success of the Active School Travel Pilot Program.

The key objectives of the School Zone Safety Guide project are to:

  • Gather community feedback on improving active school travel and school zone safety.
  • Develop school zone safety policies, guidelines, and recommendations for elementary and secondary schools, including school routes.
  • Identify opportunities to engage and educate school communities on school zone safety and active school travel.
  • Review and develop recommendations for the Active School Travel and School Crossing Guard programs.
  • Prioritize locations for safety improvements in school zones and along school routes.
