What is urban design

Urban Design involves the arrangement of buildings, public spaces, streets and landscapes.

How does the study impact me, and where I live, work and play?

Urban Design is important because it helps shape the City by influencing how people interact with each other, how they move around and how they use and experience a place. The Guidelines will be an important tool to help Markham achieve good urban design.

What will the outcome of this process be?

The City will develop a set of urban design guidelines that considers the values and input of the public, members of the development community and Council, that are realistic, practical, and reflect recent trends and best practices. The Guidelines set expectations and overall design direction to the development community, and Staff will use the Guidelines as the basis for evaluation.

How will my input be used?

The feedback gathered through public consultation will be used to inform project outputs and deliverables, including the final Draft Guidelines.

Will there be public record of the input collected?

The project team will document feedback collected at engagement events throughout the study.

When will the Urban Design Guidelines study be completed? What is the process for the study?

Please refer to updated project timelines on the Your Voice Markham webpage. The Guidelines will be a multi-phase project - which includes background review, internal workshops, consultation process and guideline development and refinement stages.
