What is the Markham TMP?
The Markham Transportation Master Plan (TMP) is a visionary guide for how we’ll move around our city now and in the future. It aims to ensure that Markham’s transportation system meets the needs of a growing and diverse population while reflecting advances in technology and sustainability.
The TMP will provide a blueprint for improving and expanding transportation options for everyone, whether they walk, bike, use public transit, drive, or explore new ways to travel. It integrates new trends like electric vehicles and micromobility devices, such as e-scooters, while focusing on sustainability and accessibility for all.
By considering population growth, Provincial and Regional policies, and Markham’s strategic goals, the TMP will help shape a transportation network that connects people, places, and opportunities efficiently and equitably.
Why are we doing this?
Markham is a rapidly growing city, and with this growth comes exciting opportunities to enhance a transportation system that meets the evolving needs of our community and enhances the quality of life for everyone.
We are developing the TMP to:
- Expand Travel Choices: Offer more options like walking, cycling, and public transit to help people move around easily and safely.
- Embrace Innovation: Integrate new technologies like electric vehicles, micro-mobility, and shared mobility services to create a modern, future-ready transportation system.
- Support Sustainability: Develop a transportation network that promotes green, low-carbon travel options, helping to advance Markham’s Net Zero initiatives and climate action goals.
- Improve Connectivity: Ensure transportation links connect neighborhoods, business hubs, schools, and recreational areas efficiently, and enhances the quality of life.
This plan will shape how people and goods move in Markham, creating a community that is more connected, sustainable, and accessible for all.
Our goals include:
- Engaging with Markham’s diverse community to reflect their needs and ideas.
- Planning for all modes of transportation: walking, cycling, transit, and driving.
- Creating Complete Streets and a Micromobility Strategy to support safer and more inclusive travel.
- Aligning with Markham’s Strategic Plan and Official Plan.
- Developing policies and strategies for sustainable and innovative transportation technologies.
- Developing a 5 to 10-year Transportation Capital Plan and funding strategies to guide infrastructure investments and implementation.
